Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed,

除了进行日常的单词备考外,考生还应在冲刺阶段对四级考试中经常出现的高频词汇(如applause、burst、candidate、excursion、urgent、spill等)和重点词组(如in advance、take advantage of、in view of、in bulk、at all costs、attribute … to …

Limiting the Use of Disposable Plastic Bags

Nowadays, the government has passed relevant regulations for limiting the use of disposable plastic bags: they are not free any more. In some shopping places, in order to invoke the public awareness of environmental protection, plastic bags are offered at high price. As a result, people are changing their behavior: paper and cloth bags that vanished for a long time come back to our daily life again. It is true that by limiting its usage, everyone in this society contributes some effort to the improvement of the environment.

范文的第一句话“Nowadays, the government has passed relevant regulations for limiting the use of disposable plastic bags: they are not free any more.”就是很好的模板句,尤其是前半句话“Nowadays, the government has passed relevant regulations for …”

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Online Games. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline below:

Online Games

As a product of modern computer and the Internet, online games have become very popular among college students. A great many students have enjoyed great pleasure and satisfaction from these games. But as we see, some students lacking self-discipline are too much indulged in these games so that their health and academic performances are affected. This phenomenon has caused much worry from the teachers and parents.

However, some others argue that online games are not always harmful. They can train the ability of youngsters to respond to things quickly. Moreover, they can stimulate their imagination and their interest in computer science. More importantly, it does bring college students much pleasure and release their pressure greatly.

From my point of view, online games are a wonderful entertainment if you play them in a reasonable way. When they interfere too much with your study, it is better for you to give them up at once. Yet if you have enough self-control over them, you can certainly obtain real pleasure and benefit a lot from them.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Extravagant Spending on College Campus. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline below:

Extravagant Spending on College Campus

According to a survey, in recent years the monthly expenditure of a college student has been on the sharp rise. Many college students have no concept of thrift in their mind. They take it for granted that they spend money from their parents before they enter into the society. This extravagant spending is primarily caused by the following factors.

First of all, nowadays most of the students are the only children of their families. They are the apple in their family’s eyes and naturally get more care and pocket money. In addition, with the improvement of living standards, parents can afford higher expenditure of their children. Moreover, some students like to pursue fashion and trends, which tend to need more money. Finally, campus love is also a possible factor causing extravagant spending.

From my point of view, a college student, as a pure consumer, should learn to be thrifty. We should limit our expenditure on daily necessities but not buy whatever we want regardless of their prices. The habit of thrift can help us form right values and is favorable to our future development.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Attending TV PK Shows Does(or Does no) good to Young People. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline below:

Attending TV PK Shows Does No Good to Young People

Nowadays, TV PK shows are great hits in China and have attracted a large number of adolescents. Some youngsters even give up their studies to attend these shows in the hope of winning their fame overnight. Some people argue that these shows provide young people more chance to show talents, while others assume that attending these shows does no good to the juvenile. As for me, I prefer to the latter opinion.

It should be admitted that some young people like Li Yuchun has stood out from the numerous attendants in the PK show, but that doesn’t mean attending the PK shows is a good way to become successful for teenagers. The following reasons can support my view. First and foremost, TV PK shows breed restlessness and induce young people to hunt after fame at whatever cost. Furthermore, TV PK shows can subvert the youngsters’ values. They cling to the idea that attending the PK shows is a shortcut to success, so they may despise the way of achieving success by hard work. Finally, if the young fail in these shows, they will suffer a psychological unbalance.

In a word, entering for TV PK shows is not a good way for young people to achieve success. I hold the opinion that young people should think twice before deciding to attend PK shows.

Compound Dictation: (31’43’’-33’55’’)

Crime is increasing worldwide. There is every reason to believe the trend will continue through the next few decades. Crime rates have always been high in multi-cultural industrialized societies such as the United States. But a new phenomenon has appeared on the world scene: rapidly rising crime rates in nations that previously reported few offences. Street crimes such as robbery, rape, murder and auto theft are clearly rising, particularly in Eastern European countries, such as Hungary, and in Western European nations, such as the Untied Kingdom. What is driving this crime explosion? There are no simple answers. Still, there are certain conditions associated with rising crime. Increasing heterogeneity of population, greater cultural pluralism, higher immigration, democratization of governments, changing national borders, greater economic growth and the lack of accepted social ideas of right and wrong. These conditions are increasingly observable around the world. For instance, cultures that were previously isolated and homogenous, such as Japan, Denmark and Greece, are now facing the sort of cultural variety that has been common in America for most of its history. Multiculturalism can be a rewarding, enriching experience, but it can also lead to a clash of values. Heterogeneity in societies will be the rule in the 21st century, and failure to recognize and plan for such diversity can lead to serious crime problems.

18. W: You had a job interview yesterday, didn’t you? How did it go?

M: Not too bad, I guess. There were about 20 candidates competing for the sales manager’s job. And finally it was down to three of us, but the other two seemed better qualified.

Passage Three

When US spacewoman Joan Higginbotham is not flying and working in space, she might be found somewhere on earth giving a speech. Higginbotham, who grew up in Chicago and became an engineer before joining NASA, that is the National Air and Space Administration, gives about a dozen speeches a year. Each speech is different because she tailors her remarks to each audience. Through interviews and E-mails, she finds out in advance her listeners#39; educational level and what information they want to know. On the subject of space walks, for example, audiences vary in their interests and how much complexity they can comprehend. To elementary school children, Higginbotham may discuss a problem that many kids want to know about. “How do spacemen in a spacesuit eat, drink, and go to the bathroom?” Her answer is “the spacesuit is really a small spacecraft with room for food and water-containers, and a waste-collection system.” To a high school audience, she might satisfy a curiosity that often arises in her pre-speech interviews with students who obviously have seen many science fiction movies. “Do spacemen carry weapons in case they encounter enemies in space?” Her answer is “No”. To scientists, she might provide technical details on such topics as the design of spacesuits that protects spacemen from the deadly temperature extremes of space. Just as elaborate preparation is required for success in space, Higginbotham says that it’s important for speakers to learn as much as possible about their listeners before a speech because every audience is different.

33. What did Joan Higginbotham do before joining in NASA?

34. How does Higginbotham prepare her speech on space walks?

题目

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the saying ‘Learning is a daily experience and a lifetime mission.” You can cite examples to illustrate the importance of lifelong learning. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

作文:

Learning is a daily experience and a lifetime mission. This is a proverb full of logic. In other words, learning is significant in our whole life. Indeed, we can learn many things from it. If you understand it and apply it to your study or work, you’ll necessarily benefit a lot from it.

There are many reasons which can explain this phenomenon and the following are the typical ones. The first reason is that learning can light our road in the coming future. There is no denying the fact that the society is developing increasingly fast and we are often easily surpassed by the people around. The only way to avoid this is to learn to improve ourselves. As an illustration, I’d like to take myself as an example. After graduation from college, my life has been full of working pressure, which contributes to my decision of pursuing further education. That’s why I can make my own way in such a competitive society.

The effect of learning can be boiled down to two major ones. First, with the spirit of learning, we are more capable of overcoming the difficulties in the future. More importantly, we can enrich our spare time life by learning. No matter who you are, you must remember that learning is the basic skill in our life.

12. What does the man mean?

A. He was looking forward to seeing the giraffes.

B. He enjoyed watching the animal performance.

C. He got home too late to see the TV special.

D. He fell asleep in the middle of the TV program.

对话的关键点是第二个说话人(man)所说的话:“… but I wish I could have stayed awake long enough to see the whole thing.”

11. What does the man suggest the woman do?

A. Read the notice on the window.

B. Go and ask the staff.

C. Get a new bus schedule.

D. Board the bus to Cleveland.

答题的关键在于理解第二个说话人说的话:“Why don’t you just go to the ticket window and ask?”

18. What do we learn about the speakers from

the conversation?

A. They were camping this time last year.

B. They didn’t quite enjoy their last picnic.

C. They learned to cooperate under harsh conditions.

D. They weren’t experienced in organizing picnics.

解答此题的关键在于理解第一个说话人(woman)的话:“This picnic should beat the last one we went to, doesn’t it?” (Oh, yeah, we had to spend the whole time inside. Good thing, the weather was cooperative this time),考生可推断出对话中的两人都认为“今年的野餐胜过去年的”,言外之意就是“去年的野餐不太理想”,由此可知正确答案为选项B。

20. What do Swedish people complain about when they visit England in winter?

nlc202309031051

A. The bad weather.

B. The gloomy winter.

C. The cold houses.

D. The long night.

解析:这道题对应第一个长对话的前半部分,题目中没有生僻词汇,考生可凭对话中的句子“Swedish people always complain that when they visit England, the houses are cold even in the good winter”找到答案。通过这句话,考生不难判断Swedish people抱怨的内容为“the houses are cold”。

23. What was the man’s major at university?

A. English Literature. B. Management.

C. French. D. Public Administration.

根据对话开头的句子“I did a degree in French at Nottingham”,考生很容易判断此题的正确答案为选项C。

29. What is Chris’ main responsibility at Taxlong Company?

A. Directing personnel evaluation.

B. Buying and maintaining equipment.

C. Drawing up plans for in-service training.

D. Interviewing and recruiting employees.

根据录音材料中的第一句话“Chris is in charge of purchasing and maintaining equipment in his division at Taxlong Company”,结合“视听基本一致”原则,考生可确定正确答案应为选项B。
