在交际过程中, 说话者在不断地监控、核查自已的言语是否传达了自已的意思。如果监控机制遇到问题, 说话者无需对方干涉, 可以主动进行纠正。这一类纠正就叫做自我修正。研究者们注意到, 在正常会话中, 人们对本族语言自我修正的能力和效果远远好于第二语言。我国大学生是在非英语母语的背境下学习英语口语, 在产生言语的过程中难免会有失误或者错误。而自我修正能导致可理解性输出, 是成功学习语言的重要因素之一, 也是衡量二语习得成功与否的一个重要标准。本研究的目的就是通过对大学生在英语口语课堂上的自我修补情况进行分析, 从而对自我修正的频率、模式及分布特点等进行探讨, 找出其中存在的问题, 并提出相应的解决方法。

二、研究对象及数据收集

笔者选取四川外国语大学成都学院酒店英语专业学生为研究实体样本。我校酒店英语专业注重培养学生英语综合应用能力, 特别是听说能力, 同时注重增强学生自主学习能力、提高综合文化素养。其英语口语教学课堂内容及形式丰富多彩, 如就给定话题发表自己的看法, 围绕主题两人对话, 小组讨论等。本研究在试点班级中根据学生的地区来源、高考成绩、性别等按比例抽取了50名学生作为研究对象。所有学生此前都有至少6年的英语学习经历, 其中文科生35名, 理科生15名;男生12名, 女生38名;英语水平较高者16名, 中等者20名, 剩下的14名学生英语基础较差。由于所有的口语课都在语音实验室进行, 所以研究者能够把学生在课堂上的话语记录下来以备分析使用。我们从中抽取了一学期40课时的部分口语课堂话语作为本研究的原始语料。累计语料约为400分钟, 其中与老师的交谈约50分钟, 与同学的两人对话约130分钟, 小组讨论约120分钟, 就某一话题自由谈话约100分钟, 然后把学生在会话中进行的自我修正找出来并转写成书面形式。

三、研究结果及分析

(一) 研究结果

我们对自我修正的分类主要借鉴Levelt[1]]针对第一语言和Van Hest[2]针对第二语言的自我修正研究, 同时结合所收集的实际语料进行适当的补充和调整。基于这种考虑, 本研究将自我修正分为相同信息修正、不同信息修正、恰当修正和错误修正四大类。我们用Word Smith语料库索引工具统计各类修正的频率, 用SPSS统计软件计算出其累计频数和百分比, 结果如下:在约400分钟, 约5.5万个词的资料中, 我们共找到5284次自我修正, 即平均每分钟约发生了13.21次自我修正, 每人平均105.68次。在各类自我修正中, 相同信息修正占绝大部分 (占58.2%) , 其次为错误修补 (占19.2%) , 接下来是恰当修正 (占13.1%) , 不同信息修正排在最后 (占9.5%) 。

(二) 结果分析

1. 相同信息修正。

相同信息修正即重复已说过的信息, 是一种隐性修正。说话者对相同信息进行修正的目的是企图通过重复语言输出这种方式来赢得思考和组织信息的时间, 从而对想要表达却未能表达出来的信息进行多方位的修正。相同信息修正又可细分为单音或音节重复修正、一个单词重复修正、一至两个单词重复修正及两个单词以上重复修正。在本研究收集到的材料中, 绝大部分相同信息修正局限于对一个单词以内的修正占到65.7%, 其中对一个单词的重复修正占56.9%。

2. 不同信息修正。

不同信息修正指说话人放弃已经表达的信息, 重新组织传递不同的信息, 即用不同的信息替代当前信息。根据信息的不同性质, 又可分为不同事实修正和信息替代修正。不同事实修正指说话人对已出口的信息内容进行更换, 反映出说话人对英语知识的掌握和运用水平不够;信息替代修正指说话者完全放弃原先打算传递的信息, 转而表达其觉得更有把握的信息。本研究收集到的资料显示, 信息替代修正占60.2%, 远远高于不同事实修正 (39.2%) 。

3. 恰当修正。

说话人刚刚结束原以为清晰、正确、自然的话语, 立即意识到已表达的信息在精确度、清晰度及语用等方面存在不妥之处, 于是放弃原来的表达方式, 在基本保留原信息内容的前提下, 进行自我修正, 以使自己的表达更加准确, 更有说服力, 这类修正就叫恰当修正。其目的是用更恰当的方式替代当前表达方式以消除歧义, 使意思表达更加精确, 或保持内容的前后连贯。恰当修正表明说话者比较关注其表达方式的恰当性及传递信息的数量的多少。研究数据表明在7种恰当修正中, 恰当插入修正的使用频率占有绝对优势, 占53.3%, 其次是恰当替换修正占19.2, 最少的是转述修正, 占1.7%。

4. 错误修正。

错误修正指说话者对自己话语中的口误所进行的修正, 包括语音、词汇、形态、句法和语序等方面的偶然失误。研究数据显示:在5类错误修正中, 用得最多的是词汇和形态修正, 分别占到38.5%和34.3%, 其次是错误语音修正 (15.1%) 和错误句法修正 (11.4%) , 而错误语序修正的使用频率极低, 仅占0.7%。

四、讨论

根据O'Connor[3]、L ennon[4]、van Hest[5]、杨柳群[6]等人的研究成果, 英语水平的差异对学生的修正类型有显著影响, 高水平的学生倾向于内容、语用、恰当修正等, 而低水平的学生倾向于语言错误修正。本研究数据显示, 有近20%的修正属于低级水平的错误修正, 只有9.5%的修正是反映说话人语言表达能力的恰当。诚然, 还有9.5%的比例属于说话者对信息内容的替换修正, 与语言水平关系没有直接联系, 但我们应该看到, 在这9.5%中, 只有大约三分之一属于真正的内容修正, 而有近三分之二属于信息替代修正, 即说话人完全放弃原已计划好并已经部分表达出来的信息, 转移话题。究其原因, 有可能是因为对原先打算表达的信息突然不感兴趣, 也有可能是不知该如何表达自己的思想, 因此只得退出原先的计划, 绕道而行, 转移信息焦点。可以说这种转移话题的行为本质上就是语言表达能力欠佳和对英语驾驭能力较弱的表现。从这个角度上讲, 自我修正反映出来的我国大学生的英语水平不容乐观。在4类自我修正中, 相同信息修正的发生频率最为频繁, 学生的话语中平均不到30个字就会出现一次相同修正。当然, 在错误还没发生之前制止这种错误的发生, 提高语言的准确性和适切性, 这无疑是一种交际策略, 能为交谈者争得更高的分数。但是如果相同信息修正现象泛滥, 语言的流利性和连贯性势必会受到严重影响, 给人以结结巴巴的感觉。造成这种结果的原因主要是许多学生在课堂上感到害怕、焦虑和紧张:由于学生的英语口语水平参差不齐, 水平较差的学生因为词汇、句型、语音语调等语言基本功不足, 害怕在众人面前犯错、出丑。由于是在教室里上课, 口语练习的环境和气氛不够轻松自然, 虽然口语课是以学生为中心, 但老师始终在现场, 而且老师随时对任何小组或个人的情况进行监控, 在水平比自己高出许多的老师面前, 学生觉得更没了自信。学生在口语课的会话中传递的信息量偏小且深度不够。这种现象可能跟目前我国各级各类口语考试的评分标准有一定关系, 即只强调发言时间的长短、语言的连贯性及组织思想和搜索表达方式时的停顿, 而对传达出的信息数量及质量没有明确规定, 也未提及对重复信息输出的限制。另外一个原因:学生平时的知识积累贫乏, 对讨论话题不甚了解。

五、结论

本次研究对三本外语学院学生的英语口语修正模式和特点得出如下结论:

1.自我修正频率相当高, 反映出大学生的英语语言监控能力较强, 对语言正确性比较重视。

2.使用相同信息修正方式最多, 造成语言流利性和连贯性较差。

3.重语言形式, 轻交际内容, 反映出学生的交际能力较弱。

4.语言错误修正所占比例较多, 洽当修正所占比例较少, 反映出大学生自动驾驭语言的能力较弱。

鉴于以上结论, 我认为要提高大学生的口语交际能力, 必须在英语口语教学中抓好以下四方面的工作:

1.夯实语言基本功。Krashen在其“语言输入假说”理论中指出:语言输入第一性、输出第二性, 只有在牢固、正确的可理解性输入的基础上, 才能保证语言输出的正确性和偏误修补的成功。因此语言技能的提高必定能降低语言的错误率, 提高语言的正确性和流利程度。

2.培养口语交际策略。教师在课堂上有意识地传授各种策略有助于大学生认识到自己谈话中的不足, 并借助近似表达、寻求帮助、话题回避等有效策略使会话更顺利地进行下去, 从而既提高了英语口语能力, 又增强了英语学习的信心。所以教师应当培养学生的冒险意识, 鼓励他们使用各种交际策略, 为学生提供运用交际策略的模板, 并为学生创设使用交际策略的机会和活动, 使他们能更好地利用已掌握的有限英语知识传递尽可能多的信息。

3.调整对学生英语口语水平的评价标准。在教学中要更加重视学生口语表达的流畅性和连贯性, 不要片面追求语言形式的准确性, 不要过分强调学生口头表达中表现出来的一些诸如用词、时态、句型等方面的不恰当之处。鼓励学生在信息内容、语用及语篇等方面做出自我修正。鼓励学生扩大自己的知识面, 关注社会上的热点问题, 这样有助于学生在口语交际中传递出更多更有深度的信息。

4.改善口语课堂的心理环境, 降低学生的焦虑感。英语教师应用教育学、心理学、教学法等方面的知识来武装自己, 在课堂上要营造出和谐、活跃、积极的学习气氛, 尊重每位学生的人格和自尊, 尤其要关照底子比较薄弱的学生, 让其享有平等的表现自己的机会, 多表扬他们的进步和取得的成绩, 而不公开讨论其不足。要给予学生充分的自由选择权, 让学生根据自己的喜好, 自由分组, 自由选择口语表演形式和表演内容。

以上我们以大学学习者英语口语语料库为基础, 对我国三本外语学院大学生的口语修正模式和特点进行描述和分析。本文的数据表明, 当学生被要求进行自我修正时, 他们一般都能够产生修正后的可理解输出。作为教师, 应最大限度地给予学生产生修正后的可理解输出的机会, 让学生自我监控自己的学习过程。当然, 本文所用的语料仅局限于三本外语学院的课堂, 研究的对象是外语学院的英语学习者, 并不具有广泛的代表性。因此, 本文结果在应用之前还必须得到更大规模的语料和精心设计的实验的检验。

摘要:本文利用50名学生40节不同水平的课堂语料建立了一个英语口语语料库, 用语料库研究方法, 对三本外语学院学生在大学英语口语中的自我修正模式和特点进行了实证研究, 并提出四点建议。
