As a matter of fact,Prof. Linda s electronic lab happened to be neighboring my office and I could always see him working in the lab,either repairing the instruments or helping Prof. Linda collect lab reports. Maybe one more example will demonstrate his commitment more clearly. Once he suggested compiling a FORTRAN program to solve a complicated circuit problem in his class. In order to do that,he had to do a lot of computer work. However,because there were few computers available in our computer lab,he had to wake up at 5 a.m. in winter (please note: “Twin city” is a downtown near the north border of China,so it is pretty cold in winter and the heating system is not working very well.) to ensure the 1st position of the long waiting line for his classmates and himself! At last he and his classmates finished the program successfully with his great efforts.

As to his personality,I would like to say Mr. Caleb is a warm-hearted, honest and upright student. He was always ready to help others. During my lectures,many students got confused at some points and I could always see Mr. Caleb help them explain during breaks. In the meanwhile,I must admit that Mr. Caleb was a bit impatient sometimes.

一、全英文授课的特点

全英文授课有很多特点, 主要表现在两个方面, 这两个因素是学生和教师。在教师方面讲, 在中国教学的教师肯定是中国人。因为留学生来中国学习的目的就是通过学习中国的技术和文化, 所以中国教师对他们是必不可少的。然而长期以来, 我国对于教师的英语教学并没有太在意, 突然间要给留学生开设课程, 而且全程都需要用英语授课, 这就给了教师很大的压力。这有点赶鸭子上架的感觉, 很多老师都是硬着头皮上的。很多学生可能根本就听不懂老师蹩脚的英语, 更何况是专业术语呢?对于学生而言, 全英教学在一定程度上对他们的学习起到了积极作用。他们不用再耗费很多时间去补习中文, 而可以在课堂中使用自己的母语。但是问题同样存在, 那就是如果全英文教学, 国外的学生来中国的目的就失去了。尤其是对于那些英语作为第一语言的国家, 他们可能觉得教师的语言水平还不如他们。很多学生在听课过程中, 各种姿势都有。他们依然保持着国外读书的自由状态, 而完全忽视了中国的教育制度。这种凌驾于制度之上的现象, 是非常可悲的。留学生在中国生活很多年, 可能什么都学不到。课堂中, 教师用他们的母语讲课, 课下他们都以小团队的形式去集会, 很少有机会接触到中国的文化[1,2]。其实说清楚些, 这完全属于一种跟风行为, 为什么中国、日本的学生去了欧美留学, 就必须使用英语呢?因为英语是欧美一些国家的官方语言, 所以学习好英语, 才能够真正理解这个国家, 学习并掌握这个民族的知识。所以, 在中国, 留学生教学课堂, 没有必要把语言锁定为英语, 也可以偶尔给学生们用汉语讲课, 让他们学习更多的知识。

二、体系的建设和健全

留学生管理制度而言, 我们应该让他们自治。所谓的自治就是指让他们自己人管理自己人, 这样不仅可以提高管理效率, 还可以尽量避免很多矛盾的产生。而对于规章制度而言, 在不违背校园制度大原则的前提下, 可以适当给他们放松一些, 因为文化的特殊性, 我们必须得考虑到少数群体的利益。例如, 一些学校有很多学生信奉伊斯兰教。他们有很多生活习惯和周围的环境不同, 吃饭就可能是一个大的问题。所以, 学校根据这些特殊因素, 可以建立清真食堂, 这样既解决了他们吃饭的矛盾, 更给他们提供了一种和谐的环境, 让他们有家的感觉。在课程体系建设方面, 我们的原则应该是让他们既学到知识, 同时还享受课堂气氛, 让他们真正喜欢上课堂教学[3,4,5]。当前教学中, 有很多问题。例如在数学课程中, 教师使用不太熟练的英语进行授课活动, 大部分学生对此都是没有兴趣的。对于英语国家留学生而言, 他们可能觉得教师的口语不太好, 而且有时候有表达不太清楚的地方。而有时候提问题的时候, 教师的回答和他们所需要解决的问题变得所答非所问。这是非常尴尬的, 时而久之, 这些学生就失去了上课的兴趣;而对于非英语国家的留学生, 英语对于他们本身就是一门外语, 所以他们不可能像掌握自己的母语一样那么轻松、自然。所以针对这样的问题, 我们必须从教师素质水平考虑, 加快提高教师英语授课能力的步伐和能力。在建立和健全管理和教学体系的过程中, 我们必须要做到民主, 充分考虑到大部分学生的利益。在西方发达国家, 人人都是有很大权利的, 同时他们也是高度自由的。所以, 我们不能让他们感觉一跨入中国的过门, 就开始受到了束缚。应该给他们一种感觉, 那就是让他们自由发展, 提升能力的环境就在这里。

三、建设和谐的课堂

留学生来中国学习的目的是双方面的, 他们首先是为了学习这个国家的技术, 其次是学习这个国家的文化。所以, 让他们在轻松的环境下, 学习好这个国家的技术, 并提高对这个国家文化的领悟能力。构建和谐的英语课堂, 对于他们来讲是最重要的。例如, 在给留学生授课过程中, 教师给学生创设轻松的氛围, 就会让他们身心放松, 从而可以很好地投入到学习中去。在我的教学中, 曾经有一位日本留学生, 他的英语是非常不好的, 而且他的听力也是非常不好的。所以, 在教学过程中, 不仅要交给他知识, 还要交会他如何交流。他由于语言障碍, 很不愿意跟其他的学生交流, 但是后来通过开导之后, 他开始变得开朗起来, 而且会很主动和一些英语国家的留学生进行交流。他发现大家并没有因为他的英语不好而不理他, 所以他会主动和其他的学生接近。在学期结束后, 他的英语已经非常好的, 能够流利地进行交流。问其原因, 他说这是因为他在课下开始有意识地去跟其他学生进行交流, 从而在交流过程中, 他学到了很多知识, 更重要的就是他锻炼了自己的英语。对于英语国家的留学生, 他们是学习的最好资源, 因为英语是世界语言, 所以他们天生就掌握了一种能力。在和这些学生交流的过程中, 有意识地告诉他们应该主动去帮助那些英语学困生, 而不应该独立地存在。所以课堂的气氛和谐了, 学生们学习的动力也足了。和谐的课堂是我们所有人都需要的, 相信没有谁喜欢在压抑的状态下学习。

留学生来中国可以从这里学到很多知识, 他们可以带走的也就只有知识了。我们同时也应利用好这种资源, 让他们为我们留下点东西, 那就是他们的知识和语言能力。留学生可以很好的建立一种英语学习氛围, 这种氛围可以感染很多人, 同时可以提升很多人的英语水平。让他们成为学生们学习的榜样, 让他们充分发挥自己的潜力。对留学生进行英文授课有很多优点, 首先是让他们容易接受知识, 其次是可以很好的建立师生关系, 增加交流的机会。但是弊端也是存在的, 例如这些留学生来中国学习中国的科技和文化知识, 但是如果所有课程都是英文授课, 这就与他们出国留学的目的成为矛盾。如果在中国学习了很多年, 却不懂中国文化和少量的语言, 无疑是非常失败的。同样的例子, 可以证明这种方式的不科学性。如果中国的学生去国外留学, 而教师使用中文进行教学, 那么学生为什么还需要出国呢?所以这种教学模式是非常值得思考的。

摘要:本文以工科院校来华留学生为研究对象, 通过对工科院校全英文授课留学生的特点、留学生管理队伍建设、留学生规章制度建设、留学生课程体系建设等方面的探讨, 为工科院校全英文授课留学生的教学、管理提供有益探索, 为不断改进留学生管理办法, 规范留学生教学管理过程提供借鉴。

一、李白诗作《静夜思》概述

《静夜思》是唐代著名诗人李白于公元726年在当时非常繁华的扬州一个旅馆住宿时所做。该诗为一首五言绝句,韵律工整并且言简意赅。原诗全文为:床前明月光/疑是地上霜/举头望明月/低头思故乡。

这首诗的大体意思是一缕皎洁的月光透过窗户投射到房间的床头前面,好像是地上下了一层薄薄的清霜。我抬起头来,仰望天空中明亮的月亮,在低头之时,开始思念我的故乡。作者通过简短的20字勾勒出了自己思念家乡的一幅凄婉的乡愁图。

2.《静夜思》英文译本的比较分析

在翻译界,对于翻译的标准问题,不同的大师有不同的学说。中国的大规模翻译始于近代,谈到翻译的标准,被誉为翻译界的前辈的严复认为翻译应该遵守“信、达、雅”原则。所谓的“信”就是翻译的译文和原文之间具有信度,翻译的译文应该最大限度的和原文等值。所谓的“达”是指翻译的译文能够为译文读者所理解达到读者的内心。所谓的“雅”是指翻译的译文不仅仅能够让读者理解而且要能够让读者根据其自身的语言文化知识感受到美感。在翻译实践中,很多译者都在努力的遵循严复先生的翻译标准,但是能够同时兼顾“信、达、雅”三项标准的作品少之又少,可以称之为佳品。

根据严复先生的翻译标准,上述7个版本的翻译各有千秋。从题目上看,翁显良版直接把《静夜思》翻译成了乡愁,虽然主要精神都包含在这个翻译中,但是夜晚安宁的气氛不见了,在信度方面有所欠缺;译本2和6采用了同样的名称,把夜和思翻译出来了,但是显得非常的呆板,在“雅”的方面没有做到。译本3、5、7在题目上不仅和原文忠实而且通顺,同时兼顾了“雅”,做得较好。译本4对于题目的翻译不够确切,堪称为败笔。在整首诗的内容的翻译上,所有的译者都堪称大师。但是,在语言风格上,只有译本7考虑了原文的韵律和节奏,在所有的英文译本中,笔者认为译本7真正忠实了严复先生的“信、达、雅”原则,是佳品中的佳品。

Jin Zhengmin is good at communication with students. During break time, he always discusses the puzzled problems met in class with the surrounding students and a warm and harmonious class atmosphere is formed under this circumstance. Except his studies, he also pays more attention to school activities and joins in such activities as Chinese-Korean communication association, etc held in school. Jin zhengmin likes Chinese language and culture andChina’s political and economic situations very much. He has a strong interest in international relation issues. After graduation from university, Jin zhengmin leaved for Manhattan of America for learning English and at the same time, he chose economics and statistics, etc as his subsidiary courses. He always writes to me. During my cooperation research inHarwardUniversity, he specially wrote to me and talked that he wanted to continue his master course of international relations inAmerica. At that time, he was preparing for various courses learning before examination. During the three years learning probationary period, Jin Zhengmin made a rapid progress in English. I am very glad about his learning plan and persistent spirit. I would like to actively recommend him. I do hope he can successfully apply for a new university and then be admitted to realize his dream.
