在上海外语教育出版社出版的《大学英语》教材中, 全册书小说类文章共有15篇, 约占总课文的40%。可见专家、编委对小说类文章的重视。而在实际教学中, 学生小说类文章的反映程度也是最好的, 其受欢迎程度远远高于说明、议论性文章。随着时代的发展, 大学英语进入了新一轮的改革。引进经典英文短篇小说进入高年级大学英语课堂教学, 势必会是一种十分有益的尝试。英文短篇小说阅读, 作为英语专业学生英美文学必修课的补充, 被列为专业知识选修课之一, 属于英语学习的更高级阶段。现进入大学英语课堂, 对学生, 乃至教师都是一种挑战。本文试分析非专业英语学生的特点, 探讨针对其特点应采取的教学方法。
一.经典英文短篇小说的优势
传统的语言点、词、短语、句型分析讲解已经不再适用于大学英语教学的高级阶段。此阶段应重在提高学生综合运用能力, 理解、分析、运用的能力, 从而提高综合文化素质。有鉴于此, 经典英文短篇小说成为公共选修课便是形势所驱。它内容生动, 能调动学生学习的积极性。篇幅短小, 有利于整体把握。此外文学作品是了解一个民族的个性、心理状态、文化特点、风俗习惯、社会关系等方面最生动、最丰富的材料, 有利于学生跨文化交际能力的培养。更重要的是, 文学作品有着丰富的内涵, 通过选取与学生社会生活相关的文章, 能够引导学生树立正确的价值观, 人生观和世界观。
二.非英语专业学生的现状
只有从学生自身实际情况出发, 制定的教学目标和教学要求, 采取的教学方法, 才是切实可行的。英文短篇小说阅读授课对象为非英语专业学生最后一学期, 即第四学期的授课内容。这一学期的学生主要有以下问题。第一:阅读能力与语言能力有限。大学英语第四学期, 半部以上的同学都已经通过四级。选修英文短篇小说阅读的学生大多对文学感兴趣, 且文字阅读能力较好。但阅读积累仍停留在历次考试的阅读题上。阅读量和阅读速度不够。据笔者课堂口头问卷调查, 学生平时除了做四六级模拟题外, 极少阅读英文杂志、文章, 更不要提小说了。应试类阅读的明显特征是缺乏想象和联想, 缺少思考。第二:背景文化知识有限。小说的理解需要一定的理论和背景文化知识。疲于应试的学生大多无力顾及文学知识、文化常识, 作家作品等信息。而这些知识的匮乏, 会一定程度上影响文章的理解。第三:学习时间有限。大学英语一共四个学期的教学, 每周仅有一次或二次课。利用有限的最后一个学期, 想取得最大的成绩, 其内容和方法上就更需要仔细考究了。
三.应对方法
《高等学校英语专业英语教学大纲》中指出“文学课程的目的在于培养学生阅读、欣赏、理解英语文学原著的能力, 掌握文学批评的基本知识和方法。通过阅读和分析英美文学作品, 促进学生语言基本功和人文素质的提高, 增强学生对西方文学及文化的了解”。大学英语短篇小说阅读大纲的制定, 应以此为参照并适当降低标准。Michael N Long认为, 阅读应以刺激学生对文本的反应为目标。经过一段时间的摸索, 我们总结英文短篇小说阅读的教学目标应以加强学生对小说的欣赏、理解, 提高学生对文学类文章的反应能力为主, 适当渗透理论、背景文化知识。为达到这样的目标, 我们采用“主体先行”的综合教学模式进行教学。
1.做好铺垫, 主体先行
首先教师在选择教学文章时, 要调查学生的平均水平, 从而在语言难度方面慎重选择。同时兼顾题材, 让学生对各种类型的小说都有所了解。在课程开始前, 教师要对短篇小说的概念, 小说要素、文体风格、人物主题以及语言修辞等做必要的解释。此外, 在每堂课预习前, 教师有必要提醒学生, 这篇文章属于哪种类型。针对不同类型的文章, 预习时要有不同的侧重。比如情节小说要注意矛盾冲突;主题性小说要注意紧扣主题;人物生平类小说要注意抓住主要人物等。小说的阅读在于整体的把握, 即学生要对整个故事的发展脉络, 人物关系, 主题等有一个大致的了解。因此课前的预习就显得尤为重要。
2.合作学习, 整体把握
现代英语教学可以采用的方式灵活多样, 如多媒体教学, 网络课堂等。就是在传统课堂上, 我们也可以将学生分为若干学习小组。组员各司其职, 互相监督。教师的主要任务是引发学生对故事内容或主题的兴趣和思考, 为文本阅读搭建一个简单的认知框架, 并鼓励学生各抒己见。传统的阅读教学是教师带领学生逐词逐句找语言点, 分析句型。这样的教学使得阅读一再中断, 做不到整体的把握。要解决这个问题, 我们认为应该暂时忽略细节, 引导学生对整体文章做出反应。分析完成之后再选出难句进行讲解。
3.深化主题, 批判思维
在文章的分析理解过后, 我们还应该对文章的主题进行探索, 引导学生从多方位比较和批判性思考。这一步骤教师要启发学生做深层意义进行思考和讨论, 从而帮助他们形成自己的评价, 学会欣赏文章。教师对学生反应的评价要客观, 切不可将权威学者的评论做为是非好坏的标准, 抹杀学生的学习兴趣。教师也可以在完成一个单元的教学后, 布置一篇小小说, 鼓励学生将自己的相似经历或感悟写出来, 进而提高自身的人文素质。
四.结语
欣赏文学作品可以在学习语言的基础上提高学生热情, 增强自身文化修养, 可谓一举两得, 但真正做好, 并不容易。对于学生还需要大量的阅读, 仅凭几个课时是远远不够的。对于教学教法, 我们还需要更多的实践摸索, 以期提高教学水平。同时教师也要博览群书, 做到心中有数, 从容应对。

2007 年《普通高中英语课程标准》在语言技能目标八级中明确要求,普通高中毕业生“能在教师的帮助下欣赏浅显的文学作品;除教材外,课外阅读量应累积达到30万词以上”。因此,如何指导学生开展英语文学阅读、培养英语阅读兴趣并提高英语阅读能力是当前高中英语教学的一大重点,关键在于理清思路“Why–What–How”,即高中英语短篇小说阅读“为什么读,读什么,怎么读”。
一、高中英语短篇小说阅读的意义
阅读是人类进步的阶梯,“人们全部知识的85%都是通过阅读获得的。……阅读意味着学习,学习就是阅读”。阅读英语文学作品,是扩大语言输入、提高语言修养、丰富情感极为重要的途径。国际英语教学专家罗伯特.希尔指出,英语学习者应在掌握语言技能的同时加强英语经典阅读,以达到对英语文化的深刻理解。一言而概之,英语文学阅读是提升学生英语文化素养和英语语用能力的有效途径,对于培养学生英语阅读兴趣,具有其他任何閱读无可比拟的优势。
近年来,国内外语教育者越来越关注英语文学阅读教学活动。黄源深认为英语学习者应养成阅读英语文学的习惯,其语用能力与没有读或很少读的人相比有明显优势。文秋芳、周燕(指出英语文学阅读有助于扩大语言输入量,增加语言和语境的体验,提高语用能力,促进写作和思维能力发展,有效培养外语语感。)黄远振、兰春寿、黄睿建议高中生应大量阅读文学作品,在语境中接触新事物、学习新知识,发展思维能力。从以上观点可以看出,英语文学阅读能丰富英语学习的途径,使学生在阅读中获得对于英语的感知和经验,是提升英语阅读能力、促进思维能力发展、提高人文素养的有效途径。
当前,高中课业繁重,英语长篇小说词汇量大,句子结构复杂,情节曲折,学生在阅读中易产生挫败感和畏难情绪;若只读简易版或缩写版小说,则无法感受真实、地道的语言,不利于高中英语文学阅读的开展。英语短篇小说篇幅短小、情节简洁、人物集中,“便于师生借助一个完整的、有限的上下文考查文学的各个要素。”且文字相对浅显,更接近生活,更容易激发学生的阅读兴趣,体会英语文学语言的韵味,同时也便于教师在英语课堂进行阅读指导。
二、高中英语短篇小说阅读的选材
高中英语短篇小说阅读的选材应基于三个原则,即“循序渐进,阶段题材,广泛阅读”。
循序渐进,把握阅读难度是英语短篇小说阅读的基础。英语文学阅读有别于汉语文学阅读,不少学生认为原版英语小说深奥难懂,易产生阅读焦虑,缺乏积极阅读的动力。因此,短篇小说选材要避免选择生词过多、内容晦涩、学生望文生畏的文章。从简单入手,扫除学生的心理障碍,引导学生乐于阅读。
在阅读起始阶段,教师可选择学生学过或对情节有所了解的短篇故事入手,如:《最后一片常春藤叶》(The Last Leaf By O.Henry),童话故事《夜莺与红玫瑰》(The Nightingale and the Rose By Oscar Wilde)。阅读这些短篇小说作品,学生能读出信心,并循序渐进地完成其它经典短篇小说作品的阅读,如:《猴爪》(The Monkey’s Paw By William Wymark Jacobs),《献给爱米莉的玫瑰》(A Rose for Emily By William Faulkner)。这些短篇小说风格各异,或感人肺腑,或蕴含哲理,或悬念十足。学生在阅读过程中,能读到各种富于变化的英文句式和地道的表达方式,在感受原汁原味英文叙述的同时,体验阅读过程中的愉悦。
精选不同题材,设定阶段阅读目标是开展英语短篇小说阅读的保障。英语短篇小说类型不一,情节性小说突出矛盾冲突、行为事件,故事性强;主题性小说使得读者阅读之后能清楚地感知作者的写作意图;插曲式小说,也叫生活片段,多是回避作者甚至叙事者的解释与说明,使小说情境呈现出复杂性。英语短篇小说阅读应精心选材,让学生感受不类型题材的短篇小说的精髓。如:Allen Poe的短篇小说情节离奇,常常伴有大量气氛烘托,充满忧郁和死亡的恐怖;海明威的短篇叙事风格简洁,给读者很大的想象空间;欧亨利的短篇情节简单,语言朴素,但总能让读者领略情理之中、意料之外的结尾;杰克伦敦的短篇则更多地刻画了北国荒野中人与自然的残酷斗争。
选材得当的英语短篇小说能为学生提供生动具体的语言材料,有利于激发学生的阅读兴趣。基于短篇小说文体特点,小说作者对英语文化世界深刻的观察和洞悉能让高中生较容易地理解英语文化,了解到英语国家的文化背景知识,培养跨文化交际能力。可以说,选材是否恰当决定了英语短篇阅读的成功。
三、高中英语短篇小说阅读模式
美国L.M.Rosenblatt在她出版的《文学探索》(Literature as Exploration)一书中指出,文学作品的阅读接受过程是读者与文本之间相互作用的过程,不同的读者对同一部作品会有不同的理解; 而同一个读者阅读同一部作品,每一次也会有不同的理解。阅读是一种对话、创造与建构,读者是阅读过程和阅读思维的中心环节。
目前中国国内英语文学阅读模式主要有:鲁子问(2007) 基于“真实阅读”理念,践行个性化阅读、任务型阅读、大容量输入,提出“课堂指导课外阅读,课堂真实运用任务”的互动阅读模式。韩宝成 以“语感阅读法”为基础,以富有人文特点的文学作品为输入语料,提出“拼读词语→听读朗读→分级阅读→引导自读”的阅读模式。黄远振、兰春寿、黄睿基于“阅读促发展”理念,借鉴“体验学习圈”和“文学圈”理论所建构的文学体验阅读READ 教学模式,对应阅读、探究、评价和发展4个要素,强调引导学生亲近文本,通过个人阅读体验理解文学作品,促进思维发展。
优秀的短篇小说都是作者经过精雕细琢,生动刻画社会人生的文学作品,如果教师在上课时把重点放在传授和讲解语言知识上,则违背了《普通高中英语课程标准》的要求,对短篇小说的赏读更是无从谈起。因此,英语短篇小说赏读课的目标是构建英语短篇小说阅读“共读→讨论→思考→分享”的阅读模式,即师生共读英语短篇,课堂讨论梳理情节脉络,思考归纳故事主题,分享个人读书心得,体验文学阅读乐趣。
1.读前阶段:确定选材,處理词汇。英语短篇小说阅读应从情节性小说入手,如:狄更斯《一个孩子的星星梦》、欧亨利《麦琪的礼物》,这类浅显易懂的短篇小说有利于帮助学生消除阅读疑虑,降低阅读焦虑,使学生在轻松愉悦的阅读体验中开展短篇小说阅读。
在英语短篇小说阅读过程中,词汇是影响学生阅读效果的重要因素。倘若对生词置之不理,学生有可能失去继续阅读的动力,倘若不断查字典,也会降低他们阅读的乐趣。因此,教师有必要在读前标注特别重要的可能影响短篇理解的词汇,或指导学生根据构词法、上下文语境、句子间的联系和背景提示猜测词义,扫清阅读障碍。
2.阅读阶段:文本共读,语篇理解,作品赏析。在英语短篇阅读课上,师生共读短篇,完成语篇理解。语篇理解的第一层面是表层理解,如:情节性小说关键在于把握作品的情节和主线,明确5W1H;主题性小说则重在感受小说的主题。语篇理解的第二层面是深层理解,即关注字里行间的深层含义,引导学生深层次理解作者或文中人物未说明的态度和想法,领略阅读的乐趣。
阅读的目的是感受语言的优美和体验阅读的乐趣。经典英语短篇小说的作者经常会用一些特殊的语言表达形式,如倒装和强调句式、口语和俚语等表达特定人物的思想。因此,英语教师应借鉴语文文学欣赏课教学,在完成表层理解后,引导学生大声朗读小说经典语段,读出文音文味文韵,从感性上、直觉上和整体上认识、体验、消化和吸收名篇佳作的精髓,欣赏地道的英文。
在充分理解作品的基础上,教师应鼓励学生对作者表达的内容和思想作出个人评价。评价无所谓对错,“一千个读者眼中有一千个哈姆雷特”这正是文学作品的魅力所在。课堂讨论及评价作品这一方式鼓励学生与小说作者产生阅读互动,而不是单纯做一个被动的阅读者。学生也可以在倾听与讨论中加深对作品的理解,从而产生一系列基于其阅读理解基础上的更多的想法。
3.读后阶段:回顾作品,思考主题,分享心得。这一阶段关注的是如何将学生“有所读、有所学”转化为“有所思,有所得”。在充分交流、理解短篇故事之后,教师可引导学生分享阅读体验,以自己的阅读体验为基础进行专题写作,鼓励学生缩写、续写或改写故事,将阅读训练和写作技能结合起来,阅读、表达、分享三者合一。读者剧场(Reader’s Theater)也是一种行之有效的阅读再创作活动。学生在充分理解故事的基础上,以流畅、有感情的朗读方式,加上声音表情和脸部表情,藉由读剧的展演方式诠释故事读本。在读者剧场的活动中,学生或默读或两人一组或整组练习朗读文章,并轮流担任不同的角色体验不同的感情、情绪、性格。读者剧场激发了学生多次阅读短篇的动机,阅读自然发生在准备表演的过程中,有助于提高阅读流畅度。
高中英语短篇阅读作品选材得当是激发学生阅读兴趣的关键第一步,阅读指导到位是顺利开展阅读的助推器,帮助学生加深对作品的理解和对主题的把握,读后写作或则重在表达个人读后思考,分享读书心得。“读短篇,明主题,齐讨论,共分享”的阅读模式,不仅关注学生的阅读体验,更为学生开启英语文学阅读之窗,真正收获阅读之趣。

The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the said:” Today my best friend slapped me in the face.”

A little panda picks up a pumpkin and wants to take it home. But the pumpkin is too big. The panda can’t take it home.
