I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court.

After the accident my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had a good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.

But every day I went to see the doctor; I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215.

My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made me pay him $770.

Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance company the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time... and I left without getting a cent.

A boy left his home to find the Bird of Happiness. He wanted it to bring warmth, flowers, trees and grass to the cold, snow-covered mountains where he lived.

Before long, he met a monster with a black beard. The monster asked him where he was going. The boy told him.

“I’ll tell you where it is,” the monster replied, “but first you must kill someone for me. If you won’t, then I’ll breathe on the road through my beard and make it disappear.”

The boy refused, so the monster breathed on the road and made it disappear. The boy continued his journey across sharp rocks and soon his feet were hurt and bleeding from cuts. Then he met a monster with a brown beard.

“I’ll tell you where the Bird of Happiness is,” the monster said, “but first you must poison someone for me. If you won’t, then I’ll breathe on the road through my beard and turn it into a desert.”

The boy refused to obey the monster. It immediately breathed on the road and turned it into a desert. Before long, the boy was weak with hunger and thirst. Then he met a monster with a white beard.

“I’ll tell you where the Bird of Happiness is,” the monster said, “but first you must blind someone for me. If you won’t, then I’ll breathe on you through my beard and blind you.”

The boy refused to obey the monster. It immediately breathed on him and blinded him.

The boy continued on his journey, but crawling now. At last, he reached the top of the mountain where the Bird of Happiness lived. He lay before the Bird, near death like all the others who had looked for it.

Then the Bird touched his eyes and he could see again. The Bird fed him, built up his strength and carried him home.

As soon as the Bird landed in the boy’s village, the countryside all around turned green. Flowers and other plants grew and everyone lived in peace and great comfort—all because the brave boy brought the Bird of Happiness home to them.

Our “Mommy and Me” time began two years ago. My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride their bikes up and down. “I wish I could take one of my children out a 1 ,” said Christie.

Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I’ll w 2 her other three. And when she watches two of mine, I’ll take someone out.

The children were extremely q 3 to accept the idea of “Mommy and Me” time. Christie’s daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with t 4 of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. “She’s like a different child when there’s no one else around,” Christie shared with me quickly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn’t have to make an effort to gain a 5 .

Just as Christie had n 6 changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children during our alone times. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is s 7 close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering (口吃的) son, Tom, doesn’t stutter once during our activities since he doesn’t have to struggle for a chance to speak. And the other son, Sam, who’s always a f 8 when around other children, shines as a leader during our times together.

The“Mommy and Me” time allows us to be s 9 alone and away with each child—talking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves (应得到) to be an o 10 child at least once in a while.
