皇帝祭天是一个非常复杂而且隆重的仪式。每年的祭天大典和祈雩大典都是在圜丘坛举行的。
皇帝在冬至日祭天的前三天,就要先到天坛斋宫内斋戒三天,然后再举行祭天大典。到了清朝雍正年间,雍正皇帝在北京紫禁城内建了斋宫后,斋戒仪式就改成了紫禁城内斋戒两天,天坛斋宫斋戒一天。皇帝在进行斋戒时要不问刑名,不宴会,不听音乐,不进女色,不饮酒,不吃荤,不看病,不吊唁,不祭神扫墓等。陪同皇帝进程斋戒的官员人等也要这样,自己身体有病的,家里有丧事的,不准参加祭天活动。
皇帝整个祭天的过程分为两个部分,第一部分是祭天前举行“视神礼”;第二部分就是祭天仪式。祭天大典分九项仪程:燔柴迎帝神;奠玉帛;进俎;初献礼;亚献礼;终献礼;撤馔;送帝神;望燎。祭天大典在举行时还要奏中和韶乐。
清代举行祭天大典时,在圜丘坛上要摆有幄次(小帐篷),分正位、配位、从位,共七组。正位在天心石稍北,里面放的是皇天上帝牌位。东西两侧的配位幄次是按照“昭穆之制”,放置已故皇帝的神牌,从位幄次共四组,位于圜丘坛的中层东西两侧。供奉的是北斗星、二十八星宿、周天星辰、风雨云雷等众神幄次。
正位、配位、从位前都有供桌,供桌上摆放有祭器,祭器里放有祭品。祭器的材料,明朝时是瓷器的;雍正时改称铜的;到了乾隆皇帝朝时,皇帝下诏说:“祭品宜法古”,分别根据用途不同材料改称了竹、木、漆、陶、铜、玉等。
皇帝在祭天的时候站在圜丘坛中层,向着北面“皇天上帝”和列祖列宗的神牌位,进行跪拜。平时 “皇天上帝”的牌位都是供奉在圜丘坛北面的皇穹宇。
皇穹宇是一座圆形院落。明嘉靖年间建,乾隆皇帝改建。“皇”指至高无上,“穹”指天,“宇”指殿宇。皇穹宇大殿是单檐攒尖顶,殿基为青石砌成的圆形须弥座,四周围以汉白玉石栏板。东、南、西三面出陛,南面丹陛上雕刻“二龙戏珠”浮雕。
大殿内由8根檐柱和8根金柱环绕支撑,三层斗拱层层上叠,顶部中间有金龙藻井。皇穹宇殿内地面中心石周围有九环扇形石。第一圈8块,其余块数都是以8的倍数递增。共360块。这里的8,代表的“八维”,也就是东、南、西、北、东北、东南、西北、西南8个方向。
皇穹宇殿内正中摆放着“皇天上帝”的牌位,东西两侧放着清代前八位皇帝的神牌。院内东配殿中供奉的是大明神和星辰神牌;西配殿中供奉的是夜明神和风雨云雷等神牌。
整个院子的围墙又被称作做回音壁。当你站在东西配殿的正后方,面对墙壁大声讲话时,另外一面的人就可以听到你说话的声音。能产生回音的效果原因有三,第一围墙把这个院子围成了一个圆形,声音打到墙面能够折射;第二墙面非常的光滑,打到墙上的声音损失较小;第三墙上的瓦向内拢起,起到了拢音的效果。院内游人越少,回音的效果就越加的明显。
