Webster Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary中对性别歧视(sexism)的定义是:prejudice or discrimination based on sex, esp discrimination against women(基于性别的偏见或歧视,尤其是对妇女的歧视)。

A man of straw is worth o a woman of gold.(稻草男儿抵得上金玉女子。);If husband be not at home, there is nobody.(丈夫不在家,等于说没人。)

A fair face is half portion.(姿色颜,嫁妆半。);Marry your son when you will, your daughter when you can.(娶妻不忙,嫁女宜速。);It is harder to marry a daughter well than to bring her up well.(养女易,嫁女难。)

Words are women, deeds are men(女子巧舌,男儿实干。);Husbands are in heaven whose wives scold not.(老婆不唠叨,丈夫就像在天堂里。);Many women, many words; Many geese, many turds.(鹅的屎多,女人的话多。)

Woman have long hair and short brains.(女人头发长,见识短。);When an ass climbs a ladder, we may find wisdom in women.(毛驴登梯时,女人才有才智。)

二是采用显示性别的代词代替男性化的代词,如用he/she, his/her代替he, his。 如businesswoman, businessman;policewoman, policeman;post woman, postman。

No fire without smoke. A little pot is soon hot.

Never offer to teach fish to swim. Every Jackmust have his Jill”人各有偶。In a calm sea , every man is a pilot . A rich man’s joke is always funny.

Forbidden fruit is (the) sweetest. All happy families resemble one another, every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. God helps those who help themselves Dust you are, to dust you shall return. Do in Rome as the Romans do.

A miss is as good as a mile. You never know till you have tried. Nothing venture, nothing have(or won)不入虎穴焉得虎子。

Books are ships that pass through the vast sea of time.(明喻)时光好比汪洋,书籍好比航船。Speech is silver, silence is gold.雄辩是银,沉默是金(暗喻)Be swift to hear, slow to speak. 坏事传千里(夸张)It is an ill bird that fouls its own nest.家丑不可外扬(强调句)He laughs best who laughs last.笑到最后笑得最好(定语从句)No pains, no gains. (省略句)Seeing is believing.眼见为实(动名词)Money is good servant, but a bad master.
