莎士比亚(William Shakespeare,1564-1616)的154首十四行诗(Sonnet)代表英语十四行诗的最高峰,一向为时人推崇。到目前为止,汉语全译本已达11本,选译本则更多。著名的译者有朱生豪(1912-1944)、朱湘(1904-1933)、屠岸(1923-)、梁宗岱(1903-1983)、杨熙龄和梁实秋(1903-1987)等。其中,最广为传诵的当属第18首,其美妙的比喻,精致的措辞和热烈的情怀,不知令多少学者和诗人叹服,赏析文字者莫不称颂其妙。然而,一般读者对该诗的看法如何呢?笔者给英语专业本科生和研究生以及非英语专业本科生教授英诗几年,从教学实践看,学生对莎氏十四行诗第18首表示欣赏的寥寥无几。经典诗歌不受大众欢迎是常见现象,人们往往归咎于时代和社会,或者归咎于读者,却很少对作品本身进行再审视,因为它们是“经典”。然而,笔者认为,有时经典作品本身的缺陷也是其不受大众欢迎的原因之一,以莎氏十四行诗第18首为例,以往从未有人指出过它的缺点,但笔者根据教学实践得来的体会,认为它至少有两大缺点,一是在音韵方面,其韵脚、头韵和韵格均不同程度的破坏了诗歌的音美和形美;二是某些比喻和描述的平淡或离奇破坏了诗歌的意美。

一、音韵参差,破坏了音美和形美

全诗的基本格律是五音步抑扬格(iambic pentameter),包括三个四行组(quatrain)和一个对偶句(couplet),采用典型的莎氏十四行的韵式,即abab cdcd efef gg。但本诗音韵并不十分齐整。

在韵脚(end rhyme)方面,第二行的temperate与第四行的date押韵,但两个词的重音位置却不同,这一韵就既非阳韵(masculine rhyme)也非阴韵(feminine rhyme),显得不伦不类,与其它严整的韵对比,这一韵念起来令人颇感突兀,破坏了诗歌的音韵美。

头韵(alliteration)方面,第六和第七行都以And 起头,形成头韵,但这两个并列的简单陈述句从意义上看,造成了语意在同一水平上徘徊而不是递进,而且用相同的And起头使两句不仅在语意也在形式上显得拖沓而无变化,破坏了诗歌的音韵美和形式美。

韵格(meter)方面,五音步抑扬格的诗歌是常有破格的,特别是在诗歌首行的第一个音步,经常是前重音后轻音。适当的破格可使诗歌免于呆板,增加变化,使音韵更显其美。但过多的破格就会打乱诗歌的格式,使其音律显得零碎,给诗歌带来负面影响,本诗即是如此。第一行“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”中的“thee to”是无法按轻重音的顺序来念的,第二行“Thou art more lovely and more temperate”中的两个more是强调,要念重音,因此这一行的韵格就不是抑扬格了。第六行“And often is his gold complexion dimm’d”中前两个音步的轻重音位置是模糊的。第十行“Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest”中的第一个音步可以看作是破格,第十一行“Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade”中的“Nor shall Death brag”重音和轻音顺序应是“重轻重重”,也不是抑扬格。可见,本诗因为破格过多,格律形式有点混乱,诗歌齐整的音韵美受到了损害。实际上,学生也经常反映这首诗歌读起来有些地方很拗口,主要就是因为韵律破格太多所致。

二、比喻和描述有时平淡或离奇,破坏意美

诗歌之美,不仅体现在音美和形美上,而且还有语意层面的美。通过语法、词汇或使用比喻等,可以建构诗歌的意美。本诗中有美丽的语言,如“darling buds of May”(五月的嫩蕊)、“eternal summer”(长夏)、“thou wander’st in his shade”(在他的暗影里蹉跎),但也有平常的比喻和描述,如诗中将“你”比喻为“夏季”,把太阳比成“天上的眼睛”,有“金色的面容”,这当然不是平淡的描述,但至少也不是新鲜的。而说死神能“夸口”,这种拟人的手法多少有些平淡了。诗中又说夏天有“租期”,租期又“太短”,则令人感到有些陌生,难有美感了。时光匆匆是人人皆知的常识,诗中用复杂的表述来说明浅显的道理,很难令人感到亲切,这样的比喻并未达到增强表现力的效果。这种将简单复杂化从而使人产生隔膜的例子还有“nature’s changing course untrimm’d ”以及“that fair thou owest”。而“And every fair from fair”则让一般读者感到很抽象,难以理解。“So long as men can breathe or eyes can see”也是一句很平常的散文句。

以上所述,是莎氏十四行诗第18首在诗艺上的缺陷。当然诗中古雅的用词和句法也会给普通读者带来阅读上的不适,但这是古今语言演变造成的隔膜,并非诗歌本身的原因,正如其多个汉译文,现在看起来也有时代距离感一样。莎士比亚十四行诗第18首是一首经典诗歌,其美妙自不待言,但是从另一个角度检视和观察,认识其缺点和不足,以避免盲目吹捧和过度美化,应该是对待文学经典的更全面因而是更可取的方法。

几个世纪以来,不同时期、不同地域、不同国度、不同民族的人,都在阅读莎士比亚。如同一千个读者眼中有一千个哈姆雷特,在这些被时间和空间隔离开来的读者心目中,也同样有着不一样的莎士比亚。对于中国读者来说,最早接触莎士比亚,应该是在19世纪中叶,通过西方传教士得以了解到这位文学巨匠。其后,中国思想家严复于1894年、1897年,梁启超于1902年,鲁迅于1907年都在译作中提到过他。随着“莎士比亚”这个名字在中国的不断推介,莎翁作品开始在中国逐渐传播和风靡。时至今日,当我们提到莎士比亚时,仍然和古代的李白、杜甫一样,是一个时代乃至整个世界的文学坐标。

不过,我们不得不面对的一个现实是,当时间逐渐流逝变迁,当新时代的文化风貌和传播方式逐渐改变,传统与经典也渐渐尘封于时间的尘埃,慢慢变得鲜有人问津。曾经万人空巷、一时洛阳纸贵的景象,恐怕再也难以重现了。是时代遗忘了经典,还是经典已经不再适应这个时代了呢?

在回答这个问题之前,伊沙与老G做出了一个大胆的尝试。他们决定用一种全新的方式来翻译莎翁的154首十四行诗,通过自己的努力来让莎翁诗作绽放出新的生命力。要知道,这不仅需要能力,更需要勇气。对于大多数读者来说,莎翁作品在中文语境里,已经长期形成了固有的表达方式,如何给读者带来新的翻译风格和阅读体验?如何尊重经典并重塑经典?应该是伊沙与老G面临的重要难题。

更何况,莎士比亚一直是公认的有史以来词汇量最多的作家,至今没有人能超过他。据统计,莎士比亚的用词量高达两万个以上,他在作品中广泛采用民间语言(如民谣、俚语、古谚语和滑稽幽默的散文等),注意吸收外来词汇,还大量运用比喻、隐喻、双关语,可谓集当时英语之大成。这对翻译者伊沙和老G来说,同样是一个重要的挑战。当然,对于我们读者来说,这也正是两位翻译者所给我们带来的最大期待之一。

对莎士比亚十四行诗的理解与翻译, 历来是争议的话题。总的来说对莎士比亚十四行诗的翻译主要有三种风格, 一种是完全按照原诗韵律翻译, 间行押韵;另一种是略作修改, 按中国人习惯的韵律处理;第三种则完全不押韵, 以求最大限度地表达原作的思想感情。但是, 由于欣赏者的口味不一, 在不同的欣赏者眼里, 不同的作品会有不同的得分。译诗之难, 难于上青天。要做到“音美”、“形美”和“意美”三者兼顾是很难的。相对来说, 音美最难传达, 形美其次, 而意美再次。而在这三者之中, 最重要的是意美, 因为它是一首诗的灵魂。真正的译诗, 应该努力用另一套语言形式忠实地传达原诗的“意美”或者说“诗意”。本文收集了梁宗岱先生, 屠岸先生, 金发燊先生和李杰先生的译本, 对四个译本中的第十八首诗的四种译文进行了比较分析。

二、莎士比亚十四行诗第十八首内容分析

此诗以人比夏天开始, 以人胜自然结束。前四行说明人比夏天更美更温柔;中四行发展了这个意思, 引到对容颜易逝的感喟;第三组则峰回路转, 推翻前言, 以胜利的末两行作结。作者以疑问句开篇, 将爱友比作夏天, 又言夏天不及爱友之美;转而说爱友之美只有在作者的诗行中才会永恒。比喻精巧, 构思精巧, 一问一答, 一叹一赞, 其迂回曲折令人折服;最后两句以人胜自然作结, 美虽然会消残, 但融入诗人不朽的诗作会流芳百世、与时空一样的永恒。此诗表达了这样一种思想:美丽的事物可以依靠文学的力量而永远不朽。这诗虽是写给朋友和情人的, 但涉及的内容十分深广, 已远远超出了对友谊和爱情的咏叹, 处处洋溢着诗人对真善美的讴歌, 对假恶丑的抨击, 实乃莎翁人文主义精神发展成熟的标志, 是其高超艺术水平的一座丰碑。

三、十四行诗第十八首译文比较

莎士比亚十四行诗第十八首充满了神奇魅力的隐喻, 在文化层面上为翻译设置了不少自然障碍和常常容易被忽视的暗礁险滩, 给译者们造成了一定的翻译困难。下面对屠岸译本, 梁宗岱译本, 金发燊译本和李杰译本做对比分析。

(一) 不同译本比较

屠译:能不能让我把你比拟作夏日?

你可是更加温和, 更加可爱。

梁译:我怎么能够把你来比作夏天?

你不但比它可爱也比它温婉;

李译:我怎能把你比作夏天?

你可比它更加温柔更加美丽。

在本诗的起首句中, 对第一个单词的翻译, 不同的译本就进行了不同的处理。屠译为“能不能”, 梁译为“我怎么能够”, 金译为“难道我能够”, 李译为“我怎能”。“能不能”是征求听话者的许可, 征求听话人的意见;“能够”则涉及个人的能力问题了。第二行的四个译文中, 屠译和李译均没有出现转折连词, 转折之意却隐含在全诗的字里行间。梁和金译使用了“却是”二字, 意思更加明朗。四个译文译法大略一致。译文1在选词上更生动, 具体, 准确;译文2虽然在选词上略逊一筹, 但与整首诗的原意和情趣一致。它的音节数目和抑扬顿挫在四个译本之中最接近原诗的平仄协调的韵律和用词朴素的风格。

显而易见, 第三行Rough winds的出现打破了全诗抑扬格的节奏, 使读者感受到了夏日里狂风的残暴, 从而衬托出“你”的温柔。这两行中, 梁把“lease”译成“出赁的期限”, 未免太直白, 失去了诗含蓄的特性。而金译作“赐予时日期限”, 意思跟粱译本似乎一样, 但更显得拗口, 晦涩难懂。李的译本处理的比较灵活, 没有生搬硬套, 译出了“神似”, 但形式上近似于自由诗。

第五行中, “eye of heaven”指太阳, 这是非常形象的用法。梁直译为“天上的眼睛”, 损失了原文形象。其他译文都是意译。在第六句上, 梁译得很巧妙, 令人读起来朗朗上口。金译有些古诗的味道。屠译和李译有些牵强。

因机缘或天时变幻萎靡不振;

李译:任何美好的事物总会消亡,

随时间或自然的变迁而远去;

在这两行中, 梁把原文中的顺序对调了一下, 更清楚地表明了事物的因果关系。金在译文里面清楚地用了表示原因的词。李的译文有些偏离诗文的特点, “随时间或自然的变迁而远去”, 没有表达出大自然的残酷无情, 从而跟下文也不能很好的连接。在前三个译文中, “chance”都被解释为机缘, 我感觉有些不妥, 改为“命运”会更好一些。李的译文根本就没有译出此词的含义, 失去了原文的意境。

在这两句中, 对于“eternal summer”的翻译略微有些许差异。屠译为“永久的夏天”, 梁译作“长夏”, 金译成“绵绵长夏”。“eternal”在字典中的意思为:永恒的, 不变的, 永生的。一年四季岁月变迁, 夏季也是周而复始, 无限循环下去, 这里也不是指同一个夏天永不结束。所以翻译成“永远”或“永恒”更好一些。“fair”意思在这里应为“美好的, 漂亮的”。各位译者基本上用了这层含义。“Nor”为英语中的否定词, 放在句首时, 句子要倒装。原文为一个倒装句, 译的时候都译为陈述句, 符合汉语表达习惯。这种句式的改变, 并不影响深层意思的表达, 而且给译者以审美情趣, 艺术修养及翻译观充分表现的余地。前三句为了句式对整或押韵需要采用了增词的方法。

李译:连死神也无法夸口你活在在他的阴影里。

不朽诗行中你将与时间同在,

对于此句, 曹明伦先生在其译文中也有个注释:“此行语出《圣经·诗篇》第23篇4节:‘虽然我穿行于死荫之幽谷, 但我不怕罹祸, 因为你与我同在……’” (曹明伦, 1995:27) 原来如此。读到这条注释才明白, 原来莎士比亚在此借用了一个典故援古证今, 借题发挥或据事类义, 由此述彼, 令典故所在诗篇更生动形象。“shade”本意为阴凉处, 树荫。此文应该指死亡的阴影。屠直译为“影子”, 不如其他三个译文更形象。“wand’rest”即“wander”徘徊, 漫步, 随意地走。金译为“走着”, 梁译作“漂泊”, 似乎一副悠然自得的样子。有典故我们了解到, 人挣扎于死亡线上就如同躺在了铺满荆棘的床上, 是十分痛苦的。我认为屠译为“踯躅”是非常合乎情理的。

13.So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

14.So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

屠译:只要人类在呼吸, 眼睛看得见,

我这诗就活着, 使你的生命绵延。

梁译:只要一天有人类, 或人有眼睛,

这诗将长存, 并且赐给你生命。

金译:只要人类能存活, 能呼吸能看,

这诗永生, 你永流芳绵延。

李译:只要人类存在, 或者人有眼睛,

你就于我的诗同在, 直到永远。

全文的精华与高潮就在这两句上。各位译者在第十三句上都加了一个标点符号“, ”, 让我们仿佛看见诗人站在诗之巅峰在慷慨陈词, 一副意气风发的样子。屠译得最气势磅礴, 梁译得有些底气不足。金译和李译有一句“或人有眼睛”不免让人发笑, 人作为动物肯定要长眼睛, 他们的译文让我们感觉, 人有一天会进化到没有视觉了, 岂不令人惊恐万分。

(二) 行尾标点符号的差异

事实上, 只要我们耐心和细心一些, 就会发现四个汉译本在整首诗的行尾标点符号上也存在着一些差异。

通过这些差异, 我们可以感觉出不同的译者对于同一句话不同的理解, 不过总体来说, 他们对符号的把握基本上是一致的, 个别句子只是有些微妙的差异。屠在第二行和第七行加了个句号, 使句子读起来更轻松自在。另一处是在第8, 10, 11, 12句出现了分歧。其他译者都认为第八句应该用分号, 用来表示一句话中并列分句之间的停顿。而梁用了句号, 表示意思这一句话已经表达完了。李在第十句里没有用符号, 而在第十一句末用了句号, 他认为第九行与第十行应该是一句完整的意思。第十二, 十三和第十四行表示的是一个完整意思。根据图示我们可以看出屠用的标点符号最多。

四、十四行诗第十八首译文分析

通过以上对四中译本的比较可以看出梁宗岱译本严谨、质切;屠岸译本流畅、浅近;金发燊译本工整对称;李杰译本直白通顺。屠岸先生的译本, 以优美晓畅的汉语, 形神兼备地把莎士比亚的十四行诗介绍给了中国读者。梁译与屠译莎士比亚十四行诗, 最明显的不同之处就是诗译的形式。屠译从形式上看是有相当严整格式的诗体, 而李译的诗行长短不一, 似乎令人想起自由诗。四首译文均出自名家之手, 不同的译本不仅反映出译家对原诗的不同理解, 而且体现了英汉两种语言截然相反的语言特色。诗歌的行数, 与原文相同不难, 而每一行诗里的音节数目、各行押韵的位置, 等等, 就不易面面俱到、再现原貌。有时有的译者就以译意 (内容) 为主, 形式上自由了。正因如此, 四个译本至少在几个方面处理手法不同。其一, 用词多寡和语体的选择。从译文1到译文4, 用词愈来愈少, 以第4个译本为最。语体上, 译文4简洁朴素。四个译文译法大略一致。译文1在选词上更生动, 具体, 准确, 但字数目略多。译文2虽然在选词上略逊一筹, 但与整首诗的原意和情趣一致。它的音节数目和抑扬顿挫在三个译本之中最能接近原诗的平仄协调的韵律和用词朴素的风格。整首译诗除用韵上没有像译文3那样顽强地追求外, 在内容和形式等多方面堪称是最接近的译文。其二, 诗篇的结构选择。4个译本中译文1最为完整, 传达诗意自然连贯。我们认为, 这是因为译者在译诗时, 为照顾原诗简洁的文体风格, 所以译诗较好地呈现了汉语诗篇偏“瘦”的特点, 避开了英语因为使用功能词、语法词、逻辑词等与诗意相关不大的词而造成的诗篇偏“肥”的障碍。

五、结语

这些译本各有所长, 各具特色。各个译本风格各异, 使我们从多个角度欣赏到了莎士比亚十四行诗的韵味, 有无与伦比的美学价值。通过以上分析, 我们可以看到四个译本尽管在细节处理上有所不同, 但在思想内容, 格律形式和修辞特征方面有着与原诗相近的效果, 而且有些方面比原诗毫不逊色。由于语言本身的原因, 几个译文中都存在一些不尽如人意之处。这是翻译的局限, 需要我们继续坚持不懈地努力。

伊丽莎白·巴雷特·勃朗宁(Elizabeth Barrett Browning,1806—1861),又称勃朗宁夫人,19世纪英国著名女诗人。《葡萄牙人的十四行诗》是勃朗宁夫人的代表作,历来被认为是英国文学史上的珍品,和《莎士比亚十四行诗》相媲美。

这部诗集其实是勃朗宁夫人自己的爱情的真实写照。她原本出生于富裕家庭,天资聪颖,却无奈在15岁时骑马伤了脊椎,从此,下肢瘫痪。之后,灾难更是接二连三,先是母亲去世,而后是她最爱的弟弟溺亡。在悲伤绝望的日子里,文学成了她唯一的寄托。直到39岁那年,她结识了小她6岁的诗人罗伯特·勃朗宁(Robert Browning),她的生命从此打开了新的一章。爱情把她从死亡的阴影里救了出来。罗伯特执着的爱让她重拾信心,甚至使她奇迹般地重新站了起来,她凭自己的双脚走到了阳光下。1846年,她不顾父亲的反对,与罗伯特私奔,同往意大利,在那里一起度过了15年幸福的时光。期间,她发表了包含44首情诗的《葡萄牙人的十四行诗》,书名得自其丈夫常戏称她为“我的小葡萄牙人”。
