电影是一种高雅的艺术, 同时又是民众喜爱的一种娱乐形式。随着中国加入WTO, 国际间的交流日益深入, 尤其以艺术文化的交流最为频繁, 其中电影是艺术文化的重要组成部分。因此, 各国影片特别是英语国家影片不断涌入中国市场, 进入寻常百姓家。而英文电影片名的汉译是其中很重要的环节。观众对于电影的第一印象来自片名, 电影首先吸引观众的也是片名。电影片名是影片内容的浓缩与精华, 既要反映影片的中心内容, 体现原片名的语言特色, 还应言简意赅, 出奇制胜, 像商品的商标, 承担着宣传、推销影片的责任, 激发观众一睹为快的欲望。

二、英文电影片名汉译的基本标准

翻译标准是翻译实践的准绳和衡量译文好坏的尺度。一般人们主张把翻译的标准概括为“忠实、通顺”四个字, 而笔者认为英文电影片名汉译的最基本标准是忠实。所谓忠实, 首先是指忠实于原英文电影片名的内容。译者必须把原英文电影片名的内容完整而准确地表达出来。同时, 还指保持原英文电影片名的形式, 即保持原英文电影片名的民族风格、时代风格、语体风格和语言风格等。正如鲁迅所说的, 翻译必须“保存原作的丰姿”。英文电影片名的汉译必须达到内容和形式的统一, 体现英文电影片名汉译的最基本标准“忠实”。

三、英文电影片名汉译的主要功能

《廊桥遗梦》 (美国影片The Bridge in Madison Country) , 是个英文电影片名汉译的成功之作, 曾使多少中国观众一见倾心, 一睹为快。怎样的译名才能成为成功之作呢?何跃敏认为, 好的译名“既要有艺术性, 又要有实用性”。谭宝全先生强调要译出“韵味”。包惠南指出, 影视片名的翻译“既要符合语言规范, 又要富有艺术魅力, 既要忠实于原片名的内容, 又要体现原名的语言特色, 力求达到艺术的再创造”, 要讲求“大众化、通俗化、口语化和艺术性”, “要能起到很好的导视和促销作用”。

片名一般都是先于影片与观众见面的。好的片名会给观众留下深刻印象, 让观众渴望先睹为快, 无疑起到了为影片作广告宣传的作用。作为影片主题思想的浓缩与精华, 片名的主要作用是帮助大众了解影片、吸引观众、活跃和美化影片, 这便是片名的功能。

归纳起来, 陈宏薇将片名的功能主要分为三种:信息功能、美感功能和祈使功能。信息功能就是通过片名, 将影片的内容简练地传达给观众, 使观众可以更好地理解原片的思想内容。美感功能就是通过精心构思的片名, 给观众以美好的享受。而信息功能、美感功能都是为了祈使功能服务的。从心理学角度讲, 人们都有一种好奇心, 见到新鲜、奇异的事物都会感到兴奋, 乐于知晓, 易受感染。祈使功能正是通过片名, 感染观众的情绪, 吸引观众。

四、英文电影片名汉译的基本方法

以上谈到了英文电影片名汉译的一些功能。为了使片名发挥以上三种功能, 在翻译过程中, 应对英文电影片名进行分析, 采取音译、直译、意译、综合翻译和增词翻译的方法进行汉译, 使电影片名的汉译从形式和内容忠实于原英文电影片名。

(一) 音译

音译是指将英语的语音形式转换成汉语发音相同或相近的文字形式的翻译方法。在英美影片中, 常用主人公的名字或故事发生的地点作为片名, 其中有些是由著名的文学作品改编而成的, 其人名、地名早已为众多的民族所熟悉 (冯晓霞, 2005) , 因此翻译时可直接采取音译法。这种方法大多适用于以人名、地名或其它专有名词为电影名字的情况。如:Troy《特洛伊》, Romeo and Julia《罗密欧与朱丽叶》, Jane Eyre《简爱》, Casablanca《卡萨布兰卡》, Titannic《泰坦尼克号》, Elizabeth《伊丽莎白》, Chicago《芝加哥》。曾在各大影院热映的Harry Potter《哈利·波特》, 采用的就是音译, 因为通过原著的畅销和电影前期大规模的宣传, 大家都已熟悉主人公哈利。

(二) 直译

直译是指在译文条件许可时, 在译文中既保持原文的内容, 又保持原文的形式——特别是保持原文的比喻、形象和民族地方色彩 (张培基, 1980) 。也就是说根据英语和汉语的特点, 在翻译中最大限度地保持原英文电影片名的内容和形式的方法, 是片名翻译的最基本的译法。如果能对英语和汉语两种文化都有较深入的了解, 并在其中找到两种文化的共核部分, 便可以采取直译的办法。在直译电影片名时, 汉译片名应在形式、意义等方面都近似英语片名。当英语与汉语在功能上达到重合时, 直译是英文电影片名汉译所采取的简单而又行之有效的翻译方法。如, The Sound of Music, The Graduate, Star Wars, The Silence of Lamb, Dances with Wolves, Time Code, The Day after Tomorrow, Love Story, Wedding Planner, Escape from New York, Gypsy Woman, Around the World 80 Days, Lion King, True Lies, The Seven Year Itch, Independence Day, City Lights分别被译为《音乐之声》、《毕业生》、《星球大战》、《沉默的羔羊》、《与狼共舞》、《时间密码》、《后天》、《爱情故事》、《婚礼策划人》、《逃出纽约》、《吉普赛女郎》、《环游世界80天》、《狮子王》、《真实的谎言》、《七年之痒》、《独立日》、《城市之光》。

(三) 意译

意译是指译者在受到译语社会文化差异的局限时, 不得不舍弃原文的字面意思, 以求译文和原文的内容相符和主要语言功能相似 (陈宏薇, 1998) 。由于中英两种语言文化的差异, 有一些英文电影片名, 如果直译, 有的未能较好地概括影片的的内容, 有的无法凸显影片的主题, 有的让人云里雾里, 不知所云, 有的则缺乏韵味, 无法激起观众一睹为快的欲望。这时, 我们可以采取意译的办法来翻译, 让国人能更好地通过英文电影片名的汉译名来了解该部影片, 从而达到更好的广告效应和宣传效果。根据英文同名小说Gone with the Wind改编的同名影片在中国公映时被译为《乱世佳人》, 既切合题意又赏心悦目, 乃成功翻译的典范之作。如直译为《飘》或《随风飘逝》, 虽无可厚非, 却逊色不少。美国片Ladder 49若按字面翻译为《梯子49》, 观众则不知所云, 其实影片讲述的是消防员的爱情和生活, 因此, 翻译成《烈火雄心》是比较恰当的。类似的例子还有:Home Alone译为《小鬼当家》;Ghost译为《人鬼情未了》;The Legend of the Fall译为《燃情岁月》;My Fair Lady译为《窈窕淑女》;Rebel without a Cause译为《阿飞正传》;Eight-legged Freaks译为《杀出重围》;It Happened One Night译为《一夜风流》;Out of Time译为《限时追捕》;From Here to Etemity译为《红粉忠魂未了情》。

下面几例都是以人名、地名、事物名称等作为片名, 本来是应该音译的, 但它们并非广为人知, 所以也宜根据影片内容进行意译:Rebecca (《蝴蝶梦》, 本为人名《吕蓓卡》) , Annatasia (《真假公主》, 本为人名安娜塔西娅) , Cleopatra (《埃及艳后》, 本为人名《克丽奥佩特拉》) 。这些译名都是译者在准确理解原名的基础上, 根据影片的内容进行再创造的结果。它们贴近影片, 传达出影片的信息, 较完美地表达了原片名的内涵。

(四) 综合译法

综合译法包括音译加直译、音译加意译和直译加意译三种情况。所谓音译加直译, 是指那些含有人名、地名及其它词的英文电影片名可以采取音译和直译相结合的办法来翻译。如:Schindler’s List译为《辛德勒名单》, Citizen Kane译为《公民凯恩》, Saving Private Ryan译为《拯救大兵瑞恩》, Edward Scissorhands译为《剪刀手爱德华》。所谓音译加意译, 是指在采用人名、地名、事物名称等作为片名的情况下, 以观众是否熟知为原则分别采取音译或意译外, 还可以先音译再结合影片内容适当增词。这种音译加意译法更为巧妙。如美国动画片Tarzan被译为《人猿泰山》, 既保留了主人公Tarzan音译, 又突出了其半人半猿的身份, 可谓形神兼备。类似的例子还有:Stuart Little译为《小老鼠斯图尔特》, Shrek译为《怪物史莱克》, Robin Hood译为《侠盗罗宾汉》, Philadelphia译为《费城故事》, Forest Gump译为《阿甘正传》。所谓直译加意译是指有些片名虽能按字面意义直译, 但译名仍不够理想。这时可采用直译加意译法, 即在原意的基础上适当调整, 按照原片内容和风格增词或减词, 以达到更好的效果。The Bridge in Madison Country是一部涉及家庭伦理与婚外恋题材的美国电影, 如果直译为《麦迪逊郡的桥》, 中国观众会误认为这是一部讲述桥梁建筑史的纪录片, 与影片内容相距甚远。但如果按直译加意译相结合的办法译为《廊桥遗梦》, 信息功能、美感功能兼得, 其效果远远超过按字面意义翻译的《麦迪逊郡的桥》。另一部中国观众耳熟能详的影片Speed译为《生死时速》, 这四个字都是以S为声母, 平仄有致, 音韵和谐。如果直译为《速度》则无法体现影片中生命与死神赛跑的扣人心弦。类似的例子还有:Waterloo Bridge译为《魂断蓝桥》, 直译《滑铁卢桥》;Pretty Women译为《风月俏佳人》, 直译《漂亮女人》;The Net译为《网络情缘》, 直译《网络》;First Knight译为《剑侠风流》, 直译《第一武士》。

(五) 增词译法

增词译法是指一些英文电影片名的翻译在直译的基础上需要增加一些词来解释和说明原英文电影片名, 让汉译名既忠实于原英文影片的内容, 又能照顾到汉语观众的习惯, 使汉译名让中国观众一目了然。例如The Incredibles译为《超人特攻队》;Monster译为《怪兽总动员》;Teminator译为《魔鬼终结者》;The Piano译为《钢琴别恋》;Alexander译为《亚力山大大帝》;Stalingrad译为《斯大林格勒保卫战》;Gandhi译为《甘地传》;44 Minutes译为《44分钟反恐行动》;Ned Kelly译为《凯利帮》;Downfall译为《帝国的毁灭》;The Village译为《神秘村》。

五、结语

综上所述, 由于英语和汉语不同的语言特色和各民族的文化差异, 把英文电影片名翻译成汉语并非易事, 而是一个艰难的再创造过程。英文电影片名的汉译蕴含着翻译学的基本理论与方法。它还要求译者具有对电影艺术的审美能力及对跨文化交际的敏感性。译者无论采取怎么样的翻译方法, 都应考虑到英语和汉语语言和文化的差异, 注重从文化和审美的角度应尽可能使电影片名的汉译从形式和内容忠实于原英文电影片名, 翻译出令人赏心悦目的片名。

摘要：本文从翻译的基本标准“忠实”入手, 阐述了在翻译过程中, 译者应对英文电影片名进行分析, 采取音译、直译、意译、综合翻译和增词翻译的方法进行汉译, 使电影片名的汉译从形式和内容忠实于原英文电影片名。
